2013 Indiana Grant
Congratulations, Portage Questers! The most recent Indiana P & R grant was awarded to their chapter at the State Spring Convention on April 13, 2013 after unanimous approval by the State P & R Committee and the Executive Board. Portage #338 requested and received $1500 for the restoration of five pieces of Oliver Family needlework. The are on display in Copshaholm, the Oliver family home which now operates as a house museum as part of the Center for History in South Bend, Indiana.
Three of the pieces hang in the Wells bedroom. The framed embroidery of a basket of flowers is silk on heavy paper which is 13 inches by 16.5 inches. It dates to the early 1800's. It was purchased by the Oliver Family between 1928 and 1940 from the Old Print Shop in New York, one of the premier art retailers in the United States.
The passion flower with a rose is a 10.5 inch by 12 inch framaed silk embroidery on silk which also dates to the early 1800's. This needlework is in the worst condition and requires extensive conservation work.
The framed mourning embroidery is silk on silk and measures 8 inches by 10.5 inches. It is of a woman with a gravestone, dating to the early 1800's.
Moses and the Ten Commandments is an 18.5 inch by 29 inch cotton embroidery on canvas. It enjoys a prominent position hanging near the entrance to the Library.
The Sampler is a 21 inch by 24 inch framed silk embroidery dated 1815 and signed by Elizabeth Green who may have been an extended member of the Oliver family. It hangs in the Nursery which is being used as an office, so is not currently on public display.
